Southern Trail: The Bardstown area offers a diverse tour route of the very old and new distillery experiences. One of the world's largest producers of Bourbon, Jim Beam boast over a 200-year long family heritage of distilling and offers some of the finest bourbons in the world. You will see one of the largest Pot Stills in the industry at Willet Distillery and they even sell their signature branded bottles shaped like their Still. Further south in Loretto, the world-famous Maker's Mark can be found with their very distinctive hand dipped red wax bottle tops. Distillery spotlight: Maker’s Mark in Loretto, KY A revolutionary bourbon created by a husband and literally topped off by his wife. Bill Samuels, Sr. Was on a quest for a new bourbon that he could share with family and friends. After trial and error, using baked bread with various grain combinations as opposed to distilling, Bill settled upon a combination replacing the traditional rye grain with soft, red winter wheat. This swap gives Maker’s the sweetness it’s known for today. Bill’s wife, Margie Samuels, came up with the ingenious idea of hand dipping the tops of the bottles in red wax to make them stand out on the shelves. Everything from the shape of the bottle, to the label, to the name, is thanks to Margie. Margie also made sure the grounds and buildings were beautiful and in tip top shape. Visitors today can relish in the beauty of Star Hill Farms as well as the unique color combination of the buildings. Margie is often credited with founding bourbon tourism. Today the distillery and business is run by Bill and Margie Samuels grandson, Rob Samuels. Distillery Spotlight: Four Roses Distillery in Lawrenceburg, KY. Four Roses was founded in by Paul Jones Jr. In 1884 He moved his thriving business to Louisville, KY, taking up residence on the famed 'Whiskey Row'. Four years later Mr. Jones trademarked the Four Roses name all the way back to the 1860's. In 1922 the Paul Jones Company purchased the Frankfort Distilling Company. In 1943 Seagram's purchased the Frankfort Distilling Company for the primary purpose of acquiring Four Roses Kentucky Straight Bourbon. Four Roses had been a bestselling bourbon in America in the 30's, 40', and 50's. With Europe and Asia's alcohol markets booming, Seagram's made the decision to discontinue selling Four Roses in the US and moved it to Europe and Asia where it thrived. In February 2002 Kirin Brewing Company Ltd. purchased the Four Roses Bourbon brand trademark and production facilities. The new acquisition was named Four Roses Distillery LLC, and just like that, Four Roses was brought back to the United States! Distillery spotlight: Willett Distillery. In 1936, three short years after prohibition was repealed, Thompson Willett began construction of the distillery on the family farm. They put their first barrels to rest in 1937. In the 1940s they introduced Old Bardstown Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey.
